Former CIA Director John Brennan has filed a lawsuit against President Trump, the Justice Department, and senior administration officials over the Justice Department's criminal investigation into him.
Brennan filed the lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, claiming that he has been "vindictively singled out for investigation and prosecution." He is seeking a court order requiring the White House, Justice Department, ODNI, and the CIA to "preserve materials and communications potentially relevant to Director Brennan's legal and constitutional challenges to any future criminal charges."
The case has been assigned to a federal judge who has previously overseen several high-profile cases involving the Trump administration. Brennan's lawsuit argues that the investigation is part of a larger pattern of the Trump administration using the criminal process to punish perceived adversaries.
The lawsuit cites two ongoing federal investigations, including the grand conspiracy probe into the Russiagate conspiracy and an investigation into whether Brennan lied under oath to the House Judiciary Committee in 2023.
Brennan's attorneys argue that Justice Department officials have engaged in "inappropriate activities" in their attempt to build a prosecutable case against their client, including making statements that disclose matters relating to open grand jury investigations and reportedly removing or sidelining career prosecutors who have balked at using the criminal process to promote the President's retribution agenda.
A Justice Department spokesperson responded to the lawsuit, saying that it is "rich" that John Brennan is accusing anyone of a "retribution campaign." Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has previously discussed the investigation, suggesting that their case is a slam dunk with "hundreds of subpoenas" and "hundreds of witnesses."
The lawsuit has sparked a heated debate over the use of the criminal process to punish perceived adversaries, with some arguing that the Trump administration is using the justice system to settle scores and others arguing that Brennan is unfairly targeting the President.
