A staggering $267 million vanished from California’s public funds, stolen through a calculated and brazen hospice fraud scheme. Attorney General Rob Bonta recently announced charges against 21 individuals, revealing a network that exploited the state’s Medi-Cal system for years.
The operation, dubbed “Operation Skip Trace,” culminated in the arrest of five suspects following searches at ten locations across Southern California. Authorities didn’t just uncover financial deceit; they seized two handguns and over $757,000 in cash, painting a picture of a criminal enterprise operating with significant resources.
Attorney General Bonta emphasized this wasn’t a simple oversight or a technicality. It was deliberate fraud, a calculated scheme where not a single legitimate hospice service was provided despite millions in fraudulent billings. This abuse directly threatens the care available to vulnerable Californians who genuinely need it.
The scale of the fraud is particularly alarming because it targeted hospice care, a system designed to provide comfort and dignity to individuals facing life-limiting illnesses. The stolen funds represent a betrayal of trust and a drain on resources meant for those in their most vulnerable moments.
Governor Gavin Newsom echoed Bonta’s sentiment, stating California will hold accountable anyone attempting to defraud taxpayers, especially within sensitive programs like hospice care. He praised the swift action of the Department of Health Care Services and the Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse.
The timing of these charges has drawn attention, occurring shortly after the Justice Department established a dedicated division focused on arresting fraudsters. This move prompted a pointed response from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, suggesting California’s actions were imitative.
Bonta, however, insists this isn’t a political maneuver. His office is focused on protecting taxpayer dollars and the vital programs relied upon by sick and vulnerable residents. The dismantling of this fraud ring represents a firm commitment to investigate, prosecute, and eliminate such abuses wherever they exist within the state.
