NYC NIGHTMARE: HE HUNTED GRANDMAS!

NYC NIGHTMARE: HE HUNTED GRANDMAS!

A chilling darkness descended upon the Carter G. Woodson Houses, a New York City public housing development, as a 71-year-old man systematically preyed upon his elderly neighbors. Kevin Gavin, a seemingly helpful handyman, concealed a monstrous secret behind a facade of assistance, leaving a trail of heartbreak and unanswered questions.

From 2015 to 2021, three women – Myrtle McKinney, Jacolia James, and Juanita Caballero – lost their lives to Gavin’s calculated violence. The initial death of 82-year-old Myrtle McKinney was tragically misdiagnosed as natural causes, a cruel twist that delayed the uncovering of a sinister pattern.

It wasn’t until a funeral director discovered a hidden stab wound that the truth began to emerge. A subsequent autopsy revealed not only the stab wound, but also brutal blunt force trauma to her head and torso, shattering the illusion of a peaceful passing.

A serial killer handyman has pleaded guilty to killing three elderly women who lived in his New York apartment building.

The violence escalated with the 2019 murder of Jacolia James, 83, who was brutally attacked, her life extinguished by Gavin’s relentless assault. The sheer brutality of the act, described as Gavin “stomping” on her neck and chest, sparked outrage and a desperate plea for increased security within the housing complex.

Juanita Caballero, 78, became Gavin’s final confirmed victim in January 2021. He strangled her with a telephone cord, leaving her son to discover the horrific scene. The image of his mother, stolen so violently, would forever haunt Steven Caballero.

Gavin’s capture came not through diligent investigation, but through the careless use of his victim’s stolen bank card. He brazenly used Caballero’s debit card at multiple locations, unknowingly providing the crucial link that would unravel his crimes.

Upon his arrest, Gavin confessed to all three murders, offering a chilling justification: he claimed the women owed him money. This flimsy excuse did little to diminish the horror of his actions, or to offer solace to the grieving families.

The Brooklyn District Attorney condemned Gavin’s actions, stating he exploited the trust of vulnerable women, gaining access to their homes only to steal their lives. These were neighbors who deserved safety and dignity, not a brutal and senseless end.

Kevin Gavin has now been sentenced to 30 years in prison, a consequence for his calculated cruelty. Yet, for the families and community left behind, the pain of loss and the haunting memories will undoubtedly endure.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can lurk within communities, and the importance of vigilance in protecting those most vulnerable.
