This summer, as the nation approaches its 250th birthday, preparations are underway for a grand commemoration – one that will light up the skies above a national icon. Mount Rushmore is poised to host a monumental Independence Day celebration, promising an evening steeped in patriotism and spectacle.
The event, a collaboration with the State of South Dakota, will unfold on the eve of July 4th. It’s designed to be more than just a display of fireworks; it will be an immersive experience featuring educational programs, heartfelt tributes, and captivating musical performances.
The decision to return fireworks to Mount Rushmore marks a significant shift. Officials envision a display that honors the monument’s history and the individuals who shaped the nation, a celebration of the American spirit on a scale rarely seen.
The return wasn’t without deliberation. Concerns regarding potential environmental impact prompted a thorough assessment, ensuring the event wouldn’t disrupt park operations or compromise existing services.
Past fireworks displays at Mount Rushmore had raised concerns about groundwater contamination, specifically elevated levels of perchlorate. A 2016 report highlighted this issue, leading to a previous ban on fireworks within the National Memorial.
Despite these past concerns, a 2020 display, hosted with then-President Trump and Governor Kristi Noem, reintroduced fireworks to the monument after a decade-long absence. Careful planning and mitigation strategies are now central to the renewed celebration.
Access to this historic event will be limited and awarded through a lottery system. Beginning April 8th, individuals can apply for up to four tickets with a small application fee.
The festivities are scheduled to begin on July 3rd at 4:00 PM Mountain Time, with entry opening earlier that day at 1:00 PM. The evening promises a powerful and unforgettable tribute to America’s enduring legacy.
