Meneline Wong, a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, finds liberation in art – specifically, in the boundless possibilities of mixed media. For her, the complexities of womanhood demand a canvas that embraces texture, nuance, and the beauty found within imperfection.
Twenty of Ms. Wong’s latest creations now adorn the walls of the Conrad Manila, offering a vibrant and introspective experience for guests. The exhibit, titled “Creases,” marks the 40th installment in the hotel’s “Of Art and Wine” series, a compelling intersection of contemporary art and a doctor’s intimate understanding of the women she serves.
Ms. Wong’s artistic journey gained significant momentum in 2018 when she secured second place in the prestigious GSIS National Art Competition. Since then, she has relentlessly explored the interplay of movement, flow, and organic transformation within her work, allowing her intuition to guide each piece.
“I’m spontaneous,” she shared, describing her process. “I rarely plan, though I’m envisioning a more sculptural direction for a future work.” This spontaneity is evident in the layered compositions and expressive forms that define her style.
The title, “Creases,” isn’t accidental. It draws the eye to the folds and textures within the artwork, challenging viewers to reconsider what constitutes a flaw. These aren’t imperfections, but rather symbolic representations of the struggles, sacrifices, and quiet resilience inherent in the female experience.
A delicate balance of pastels and bold metallics further enriches the narrative. The soft hues evoke finesse, while the shimmering metals embody an inner strength, a testament to the multifaceted nature of womanhood.
Ms. Wong passionately believes that women have been unfairly constrained by limiting definitions. Labels like “weaker sex” or “too emotional” simply fail to capture the depth and courage she witnesses daily.
“These are limitations imposed by a world that hasn’t truly taken the time to see,” she explained, her art serving as a powerful counter-narrative. It’s a visual declaration of the strength and beauty that exists beyond societal expectations.
Rupert Hallam, General Manager of Conrad Manila, echoed this sentiment, recognizing the exhibit as a tribute to the “remarkable contributions and impact of every woman.” He emphasized the beauty found in vulnerability and imperfection.
Susane Tiausus, of Art Lounge Manila, highlighted the emotional resonance of Ms. Wong’s work. “Meneline doesn’t hesitate to express what’s within,” she noted, encouraging viewers to delve deeper and uncover the stories and emotions embedded within each piece.
“Creases” builds upon a series of mixed-media paintings initially created for a Women’s Month group show. Ms. Wong envisions a natural evolution of her art, moving beyond the canvas and into three-dimensional sculpture.
Balancing a demanding medical practice with her artistic pursuits – clinic three days a week, painting twice, and making time for sports – Ms. Wong remains driven to push creative boundaries. Her ambition extends to international exhibitions, and ultimately, a solo show on a global stage.
“Of Art and Wine: Creases” is currently on display at Gallery C within the Conrad Manila, offering a compelling and deeply moving exploration of the female spirit.
