The Islamic Centre of Oshawa has confirmed a man found slain near the mosque on Thursday was a member.

“A very dear community brother lost his life around the premises of the masjid,” the statement said.

“We encourage the community not to speculate at this point as to the motivation of the attackers. We are in close contact with the police and all appropriate authorities and we understand that they are investigating all avenues.

“We will provide more information at it comes available. Please keep the family of our beloved brother in your duas (a form of prayers).”

‘OBVIOUS SIGNS OF TRAUMA’

Durham Regional Police said that a “male was located with obvious signs of trauma” in the area of Simcoe St. S. and McGrigor St. on Thursday afternoon. He was dead at the scene and police said they were investigating it as a homicide.

“We are aware of the proximity of this incident to the nearby mosque,” Durham cops said on X. “Determining whether there is any connection between the location and this tragic event will form part of the ongoing investigation.

“We understand that this incident has had a significant impact on members of the Muslim community and the broader public. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family, friends, and all those affected.”

Police said the investigation is being done in cooperation with the centre.

‘TRAGIC NEWS’

“Investigators continue to work diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident. We remain in close contact with leaders from the Oshawa Islamic Centre and the broader community to ensure the investigation is conducted with sensitivity, respect, and transparency.”

Ajax Councillor Nancy Henry called the homicide “tragic news.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims loved ones and the Oshawa Islamic Centre,” she posted to X. “I support a respectful, transparent investigation and stand with all communities affected. Compassion, love and unity matter most during this difficult time.”
