WWII bomblet found on Oshawa foot path rendered safe at CF military base

WWII bomblet found on Oshawa foot path rendered safe at CF military base
Canadian Second World War veterans and a delegation from the Government of Canada attend the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands during the Second World War at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek on May 2, 2025.

It’s not everyday you come across a Second World War bomb – or rather a bomblet.

But that’s exactly what was found on a foot path in Oshawa on Wednesday.

Durham Regional Police say the explosive device was eventually rendered safe after being found around 4:20 p.m.

Officers responded to a suspicious package call on a foot path in the area of Gibb St. and Centre St. S.

Cops were told that an unidentified package with wiring and warning labels was located on the path, so a perimeter was set up and the immediate area was evacuated.

Appeared to be military ordinance

Police say Tactical Support Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) officers attended and located what appeared to be military ordinance.

A Department of National Defence (DND) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialist attended the scene and confirmed it was a Second World War-era bomblet.

DND officials, with the assistance of Durham cops, removed the ordnance, which was then transported to a Canadian Forces military base to be rendered safe.

Nobody was injured and the investigation is ongoing.
