Passaic County, New Jersey, has once again found itself at the center of an election integrity storm.

The Democrat-controlled Board of Elections recently votedagainstplacing security cameras in ballot storage areas. It refused to implement basic sign-in and sign-out logs for individuals accessing mail-in ballots.

This decision undermines transparency at a time when voters across the state are demanding more oversight, not less.

The New Jersey Republican Party sounded the alarm in astatementthis week, blasting the move as reckless and politically motivated.

They noted that the Chairman of the Passaic County Board of Elections is also the County Democrat Chairman—a conflict of interest that only deepens suspicions.

“The decision by Democratic members of the Passaic County Board of Elections to block the use of security cameras in ballot storage areas and their refusal to require a sign-in/out log for anyone accessing mail-in ballots is alarming,” the NJGOP declared.

Their concern is far from unfounded. In recent years, Passaic County has been tied to high-profile voter fraud scandals.

One of the most infamous came in 2020, when a Paterson city council election had to beinvalidatedafter authorities uncovered a mail-in ballot scheme.

Several individuals, including sitting council members, were charged with fraud.

That case became a national example of how mail-in ballots can be abused when oversight is weak.

Passaic has also gained areputationfor being among the slowest counties in New Jersey to count ballots and certify elections.

In close races, delayscreate unnecessary doubt and feed public distrust.

Blocking cameras andrejectingaccess logs will only fuel speculation that ballots are being handled in the shadows.

Election integrity does not belong to one party. Both Democrats and Republicans should agree that cameras and sign-in sheets are common-sense safeguards.

These tools are already used in other states and counties to protect against tampering and to reassure voters that ballots are stored securely.

Refusing them sends the opposite message: that secrecy is preferable to accountability.

As the NJGOPemphasized, vigilance is essential, but the ultimate response must come at the ballot box.

Chairman Glenn Paulsen urged voters to show up in overwhelming numbers by November 4th, insisting, “We are paying attention, we are vigilant, but the way we are going to win is to make it too big to rig.”

New Jersey voters deserve better than backroom politics and deliberate opacity. Election integrity should never be controversial.
