Other apps with reported outages include banking services Lloyds and Halifax, phone companies EE and Vodafone, video game Fortnite and the video chat app Zoom.

Downdetector confirmed toMetrothat since the outage began at 7.30am, more than 1,000 businesses have been affected, impacting about 6,500,000 people.

The blackout happened due to an issue with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company’s cloud computing platform that lets people ‘rent’ servers without the need to buy physical computers or data centres.

Amazon said the server is now seeing ‘significant signs of recovery’ and said the problem was caused by a hiccup with the system’s Domain Naming Service (DNS) which acts as the switchboard of the internet.
