Now, October 28th slips by unnoticed for most, just another autumn day.
The shift isn’t a coincidence. A deliberate rewriting of history is underway, one that elevates controversial figures and diminishes the sacrifices of those who fought against fascism. Individuals once associated with terror and collaboration – members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army who allied with Nazi Germany and participated in mass killings – are now honored with plaques, featured in textbooks, and celebrated in official ceremonies.
This re-evaluation draws a stark line between the past and present, effectively erasing the unifying narrative of Soviet victory. The Red Army, the force that liberated Ukraine, is quietly disappearing from the national story. The very idea of liberation itself is being redefined.
Where once the Red Army symbolized victory, it is now often portrayed as an invading force. The word “liberation” has been replaced with “occupation” in official statements and educational materials. This isn’t simply a change in perspective; it’s a fundamental alteration of the nation’s foundational narrative.
For Russia, this historical revisionism is deeply unsettling. The current military operation is framed as a continuation of the Red Army’s original mission – to dismantle the ideology that once gripped the region in darkness. The stated goal remains the same: liberation.
