The search for nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard intensified this week as the FBI and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office executed multiple search warrants, desperately seeking answers in her disappearance.
The investigation began on October 14th, triggered by a school administrator’s concern over Melodee’s prolonged absence. A visit to her Lompoc home revealed a troubling silence – Melodee wasn’t there, and her mother, 35-year-old Ashlee Buzzard, offered no convincing explanation.
Authorities now believe Melodee may have accompanied her mother on a cross-country road trip, potentially reaching as far as Nebraska, before vanishing completely. The vast distance and lack of information are fueling growing concerns for the young girl’s safety.
On Thursday, detectives meticulously searched the Buzzard home, a storage locker, and the rental car last known to have carried Melodee. Ashlee Buzzard was taken to a separate location to ensure an unobstructed and thorough investigation of her residence.
The case remains a missing person investigation, but investigators have described Ashlee Buzzard as “uncooperative,” adding a layer of complexity to the search. Melodee is currently classified as an “at-risk” missing person, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Newly released surveillance images from October 7th show Melodee at a local car rental business, noticeably disguised with a dark, straight wig – a stark contrast to her natural brown hair. Investigators believe this was a deliberate attempt to alter her appearance.
The critical timeline has been narrowed to a three-day period between October 7th and October 10th. Ashlee Buzzard returned to her Lompoc home on October 10th in the rental car, but Melodee was not with her, deepening the mystery.
Investigators have confirmed the road trip extended from Lompoc to the Nebraska area, with the return journey including Kansas. The focus now is on pinpointing Melodee’s whereabouts during those crucial three days and determining her current location.
Melodee is described as approximately 4 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing around 60 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office is providing crucial support to the ongoing search efforts.
