NYC MAYORAL RACE ERUPTS: Sharpton DECLARES WAR on Bigotry as Trump's Welfare AXE Falls!

NYC MAYORAL RACE ERUPTS: Sharpton DECLARES WAR on Bigotry as Trump's Welfare AXE Falls!

A firestorm erupted in New York City’s mayoral race Saturday, as Reverend Al Sharpton fiercely condemned what he called a surge of “ugly Islamophobia.” Sharpton accused opponents of painting all Muslims with the same brush, falsely labeling them as terrorists in a direct attack on Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Speaking at a Harlem rally for Mamdani, Sharpton’s voice resonated with outrage. He challenged the tactic of exploiting fear, particularly in the wake of 9/11, calling it an insult to the intelligence of New Yorkers. “If you can’t get a vote on your record, don’t play us against each other,” he declared to a captivated audience at his National Action Network headquarters.

The event drew a powerful coalition, including Pastor Miles Travis Boyd, whose mother was lost on 9/11, and other faith leaders united against the divisive rhetoric. Their presence underscored the deep emotional weight of the accusations and the urgency of addressing the rising tensions.

The controversy ignited after former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo faced criticism for a radio exchange where he was challenged about Mamdani’s preparedness to lead during a crisis. A host suggested Mamdani would “cheer” another 9/11 attack, a claim Cuomo debated.

Cuomo vehemently denied accusations of Islamophobia, distancing himself from inflammatory statements made by Republican Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, who had endorsed him. He countered by accusing Mamdani of fostering division and antisemitism, citing his alleged reluctance to denounce calls for an “intifada” and past remarks deemed offensive.

Sharpton swiftly addressed the issue of association, arguing that a simple appearance or handshake doesn’t equate to shared responsibility for accusations leveled against others. This was a clear reference to Mamdani’s recent meeting with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, a figure linked to past terrorist activity.

Sharpton emphatically stated his opposition to both the October 7th attacks in Israel and the ensuing conflict in Gaza, reaffirming his commitment to inclusivity. He passionately called for unity, urging the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities to “come from the shadows” and walk together.

He then unequivocally endorsed Mamdani, praising him as the only candidate who consistently showed up to support their events. “For fairness, for affordability, for those who’ve been victimized, I bring you the candidate who showed up, Zohran Mamdani,” Sharpton proclaimed, as the crowd erupted in applause.

Mamdani seized the moment, drawing a powerful parallel between the current struggles and the Reconstruction era following the Civil War. He accused former President Trump of systematically dismantling modern welfare programs, framing them as today’s equivalent of the Freedmen’s Bureau, designed to aid newly freed slaves.

“If the Freedmen’s Bureau existed today, Donald Trump would pilfer its coffers and smear it as socialist overreach,” Mamdani asserted. He argued Trump would attack any program designed to uplift the poor, prioritizing the wealthy instead.

Mamdani painted a vision of a revitalized New York, rooted in moral and economic renewal, extending from Harlem to Queens to Bay Ridge. He described a movement built on providing aid to the poor, freeing those burdened by long hours, and banishing injustice from City Hall.

“Over the past 12 months, my friends, we have built a movement around creating a society we would all like to see,” Mamdani declared, “a society where faith is restored in City Hall.” His words resonated with a crowd eager for change and a renewed sense of hope.
