ASEAN'S DATA WIZARDS UNLEASHED: Prepare to Be Amazed!

ASEAN'S DATA WIZARDS UNLEASHED: Prepare to Be Amazed!

Twenty-two bright minds from across Southeast Asia converged in Kuala Lumpur, not for a typical competition, but for a challenge to reshape their region’s future. These students, representing the ten ASEAN member states, weren’t debating policy or crafting treaties – they were wielding the power of data.

For nine years, the ASEAN Data Science Explorers (DSE) program has been quietly cultivating a generation equipped to tackle the most pressing socioeconomic issues facing the region. This isn’t about abstract theory; it’s about applying real-world data analytics, using tools like SAP Analytics Cloud, to problems that impact millions.

This year’s projects focused on six critical Sustainable Development Goals, from ensuring access to clean water and sanitation to combating climate change and promoting responsible consumption. The urgency of these goals fueled a wave of innovative solutions, born from the insights of these young data scientists.

Emerging victorious, Team DataMinions from Lao PDR presented ‘Namjai Smart Water Tank,’ a deceptively simple yet profoundly impactful device. It doesn’t just filter water; it actively detects harmful substances and instantly alerts households, NGOs, and authorities, creating a proactive defense against water contamination in Laos, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

Close behind, Team Mamamamoodeng from Thailand and Team MyKXLab from Malaysia secured the first and second runner-up positions, demonstrating the breadth of talent and ingenuity within the ASEAN region. Each project showcased a unique approach to solving complex problems.

The Philippines was represented by Team Sharksfin, whose ‘HydroLink’ system offered a dual approach to the region’s water crisis. Combining on-the-ground monitoring with a user-friendly mobile application and centralized data dashboards, HydroLink aims to revolutionize water management practices.

The need for this kind of digital literacy is stark. A 2022 study revealed that over 72% of underserved youth in ASEAN lack essential advanced digital skills. The DSE program directly addresses this gap, providing the training and tools necessary to thrive in the evolving job market.

The program’s success is bolstered by strong regional support, including the Ministry of Education Malaysia, which hosted the recent finals as part of the ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 events. High-level delegates from all ten member states underscored the importance of preparing ASEAN youth for a digitally-driven future.

“This program exemplifies the power of regional collaboration to foster innovation and build crucial skills,” stated Dr. Mohd. Azam Ahmad, director-general of the Ministry of Education Malaysia. “It has significantly advanced digital literacy in Malaysia, impacting both students and educators.”

Dr. Piti Srisangnam, executive director of the ASEAN Foundation, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the program’s role in nurturing talent. “We empower these young people to think critically and develop solutions, contributing to both their personal growth and the overall development of ASEAN.”

Since its inception in 2017, the ASEAN DSE program has reached over 111,000 young people, including those from underserved communities, and engaged more than 3,300 educators. Notably, women comprise 55% of the program’s beneficiaries, highlighting its commitment to inclusivity.
