DOMESTIC WORKERS WIN: Pay Raises EXPLODE in Ilocos & Visayas!

DOMESTIC WORKERS WIN: Pay Raises EXPLODE in Ilocos & Visayas!

A significant shift is underway for domestic workers in two regions of the Philippines, offering a much-needed boost to their incomes. Recent decisions promise increased financial stability for those providing essential care and household services.

Domestic workers in Region I, encompassing Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan, will see their monthly minimum wage rise by a substantial P700. This brings the new minimum to P6,700, a tangible improvement for families relying on these earnings.

The impact extends to key cities within the region, including Alaminos, Batac, Dagupan, and Laoag, ensuring a broader reach of this positive change. This adjustment acknowledges the vital role domestic workers play in these communities.

Simultaneously, Region VI, encompassing Western Visayas provinces like Aklan, Antique, and Iloilo, will implement a P500 monthly increase. This elevates the starting monthly pay for domestic workers to P6,500, providing a welcome financial lift.

The change affects not only the provinces but also component cities and the highly urbanized areas of Iloilo and Bacolod, demonstrating a widespread commitment to improving the livelihoods of domestic workers. These new rates are set to take effect on November 19th.

Beyond domestic workers, broader minimum wage adjustments are also being rolled out. In the Ilocos Region, non-agricultural workers in larger establishments will gain P37 daily, reaching P505, while smaller firms and agricultural workers will see a P45 increase to P480.

Western Visayas is also experiencing similar adjustments, with non-agricultural workers in larger companies receiving a P37 increase to P550 per day, and those in smaller establishments gaining P45, reaching P530. Agricultural workers will benefit from a P40 increase to P520 daily.

These regional adjustments are part of an ongoing process, with Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma indicating that at least four more regions are preparing to issue new wage orders before the year’s end. Public hearings are scheduled this month in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Mimaropa, Eastern Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula.

While these regional wage boards play a crucial role, a larger debate continues regarding a nationwide, legislated wage increase. Labor groups argue that the current system disadvantages workers in less developed provinces, failing to adequately address the rising cost of living.

The core of the argument centers on ensuring a standardized, living wage across the Philippines, providing all workers with the financial security they deserve. This push for a national standard reflects a growing demand for equitable compensation and a more secure future for Filipino workers.
