For over 180 years, Bibby Marine has navigated the world’s oceans, supporting vital offshore infrastructure. Their fleet of specialized vessels, the Wavemasters, are lifelines to technicians maintaining oil rigs, gas platforms, and the rapidly expanding network of wind turbines at sea.
But keeping these crews connected – and their operations running smoothly – presented a significant challenge. Traditional satellite communication, relying on satellites 36,000 kilometers distant, meant frustrating delays and exorbitant costs. This outdated system hindered efficiency and impacted the wellbeing of those living and working aboard.
A successful trial sparked a dramatic shift. Bibby Marine partnered with Wireless Logic to implement a revolutionary connectivity upgrade, blending the power of Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology with the reach of 4G and 5G cellular networks.
This isn’t simply about faster internet. Starlink’s satellites, orbiting just 550 kilometers above Earth, drastically reduce communication lag, enabling real-time data transfer and seamless connectivity. Coupled with long-range maritime antennas capable of pulling in cellular signals up to 50 kilometers offshore, the system ensures uninterrupted service even in the most remote locations.
Wireless Logic is building a robust local area network (LAN) on each vessel, complete with advanced switches, routers, and access points. This infrastructure will deliver high-quality Wi-Fi throughout the ships, transforming the digital experience for both crew and passengers.
The five-year agreement signifies more than just a technological advancement. It represents a commitment to operational reliability, enhanced safety, and improved quality of life at sea. Bibby Marine is focused on creating a connected environment that empowers its teams and drives efficiency.
This partnership also looks towards the future. Both companies envision a fully electrically powered ship, further demonstrating a dedication to innovation and sustainable maritime practices. The enhanced connectivity will be crucial in managing and optimizing these next-generation vessels.
For Bibby Marine, the goal is simple: to continually improve the experience for those who depend on their vessels. Reliable, high-speed internet is no longer a luxury, but a fundamental requirement for modern maritime operations and the wellbeing of the people who keep the world’s energy infrastructure running.
