SIRI'S FAILURE: Apple on the BRINK?

SIRI'S FAILURE: Apple on the BRINK?

Remember the promise of a dramatically improved Siri? Apple unveiled plans for this “enhanced” version in June of 2024, intending to roll it out with iOS 18. But the update came and went, leaving many to wonder if it would ever materialize.

It’s easy to feel a sense of disillusionment. When even a company valued at $4 trillion can’t deliver on its word, what can we truly rely on? The world feels increasingly unpredictable, and trust seems a fragile commodity.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope. Apple’s leadership recently announced that the enhanced Siri is still planned for release, albeit pushed back to 2026. A tentative “huzzah” feels appropriate, given the circumstances.

The vision extends beyond just improvements; Apple aims for a more personalized Siri experience. Progress is being made, and the expectation is for a release sometime next year, according to company statements.

To achieve this ambitious goal, Apple may be seeking assistance from an unexpected source: Google’s Gemini. Reports suggest a customized version of Gemini will power some of Siri’s new capabilities, rather than directly routing requests to Google.

This approach evokes a curious parallel to the past, reminiscent of eWorld – a licensed version of AOL. While the scale is vastly different, the dynamic of leveraging external technology with a bespoke adaptation seems similar.

Despite the potential, there’s a realistic acknowledgment that success isn’t guaranteed. Experts caution that user adoption, seamless integration, and repairing Siri’s reputation are all significant hurdles.

The sentiment is clear: this could very well not work. Given past experiences with Siri, many users are already prepared for disappointment. It’s a refreshingly honest assessment of the challenges ahead.

Apple’s CEO also hinted at the possibility of acquisitions to bolster their AI capabilities. The company is actively monitoring the market for opportunities to accelerate their roadmap, potentially through mergers and acquisitions.

This openness to M&A suggests a growing concern about talent acquisition. Apple has reportedly lost numerous AI executives to competitors like Meta, potentially necessitating a strategic purchase to rebuild its internal expertise.

The situation raises a perplexing question: why would Meta actively recruit from a company perceived as lagging in AI? The logic isn’t immediately apparent, but it’s a challenge for Meta to resolve.

Ultimately, a more intelligent and conversational Siri is a highly desired feature. While the broader AI landscape is uneven, and iPhones aren’t likely to become less desirable due to AI shortcomings, Apple has made promises it must keep.

Another missed deadline could severely damage the company’s credibility. The pressure is on to deliver a truly enhanced Siri experience and restore user confidence.
