Newly released notes from Jim Comey’s files have brought a shadowy figure back into sharp focus: Stefan Halper. The notes reveal a crossed-out name – “Mitch” – now widely understood to be a codename for Halper, a central player in the controversial investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Halper’s involvement wasn’t limited to a single intelligence agency. He operated as a Confidential Human Source for the FBI during “Crossfire Hurricane,” while simultaneously maintaining connections with British intelligence and even working for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. This complex web of affiliations raises serious questions about the impartiality of the investigation.
Evidence suggests Halper was instrumental in crafting a narrative designed to distract from Clinton’s own email scandal. He allegedly devised a plan to link Donald Trump to Russian intelligence, initiating a chain of events that would dominate headlines for years. His methods, however, relied heavily on fabricated information.
Halper, working with former British intelligence head Richard Dearlove and dossier author Christopher Steele, actively spread false claims about Carter Page, a Trump campaign advisor, to justify surveillance. He didn’t stop there. He fabricated a story about General Michael Flynn having an affair with a woman falsely portrayed as a Russian spy.
Svetlana Lokhova, the woman at the center of that fabricated story, has consistently maintained her innocence. The FBI itself officially cleared her of any connection to Russian intelligence. Yet, just days before Comey announced the investigation into Trump’s campaign, the Wall Street Journal published the damaging, untrue story originating with Halper, Steele, and amplified by others.
The timing is critical. Lokhova recounts that the false narrative appeared mere days before the official investigation began, suggesting a deliberate attempt to manufacture a scandal. Halper’s lies were the spark that ignited the FBI’s scrutiny of General Flynn, based on information the agency knew to be false.
Reports from 2021 confirmed Halper’s deep involvement in the attempt to undermine the Trump administration. Disturbingly, claims surfaced that his case file had been deliberately destroyed, and that Halper struggled with a severe crack cocaine addiction. The destruction of the file raises further questions about a potential cover-up.
