The former Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe, aged 78, was discovered dead in her Dartmoor residence on 9 July. Investigators found her body with a serious head wound and evidence of a violent assault.
A murder inquiry was launched, and a 26‑year‑old white British male was arrested in Newton Abbot. Police have stated the incident is not considered terrorism and no political motive has been identified.
Officers urged the public to avoid speculation, noting the negative impact on the investigation and the distress caused to Widdecombe’s family.
Widdecombe had been scheduled to appear on a television program and had been contacted via text and call, yet she failed to respond. Evidence indicates the attack took place around 12:30 pm on 8 July, the day before she was found.
The suspect was released from custody on 11 July and is no longer part of the investigation. Police continue to search for any additional suspects while maintaining heightened security in the area.
Neighbours describe Widdecombe as a kind but reclusive figure. A van arrived early on the day of the incident and a white male in hiking attire was observed nearby, raising further questions.
A second suspect, a 28‑year‑old male, was arrested
