A morning commute turned into a desperate race against time as a 49-year-old man fought for his life after being hit by a pickup truck. The collision occurred at the busy intersection of Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue West, casting a shadow over the Casa Loma neighbourhood.
Police report the incident unfolded around 6:40 a.m. A black Dodge Ram, travelling west on St. Clair, struck the pedestrian as he was crossing the street. The impact sent shockwaves through the area, immediately summoning emergency services.
Paramedics rushed the injured man to the hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 65-year-old man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
This incident is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of pedestrians in the city. Tragically, fifteen pedestrians have already lost their lives on Toronto streets this year, a number that echoes the twenty-four fatalities recorded last year.
While last year’s total represented a slight decrease from the twenty-nine pedestrian deaths in 2023, the ongoing risk remains deeply concerning. Each statistic represents a life altered forever, a family grieving, and a community shaken.
Investigators are now meticulously piecing together the events leading up to the collision. They are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses security or dashcam footage from the area around Bathurst and St. Clair to come forward.
