HEZBOLLAH DECLARES: NO PEACE WITH ISRAEL – EVER.

HEZBOLLAH DECLARES: NO PEACE WITH ISRAEL – EVER.

Beirut is bracing for a deepening crisis as Hezbollah vehemently rejects any prospect of direct political negotiations with Israel. The powerful group issued a stark declaration, asserting its unwavering right to self-defense amidst mounting external pressure.

Recent weeks have seen increased diplomatic efforts from the United States and Egypt, urging Lebanese leaders to consider opening direct talks with their Israeli counterparts. This push comes despite the fact that Lebanon and Israel remain technically at war, a conflict primarily engaged in by Hezbollah, not the Lebanese state.

Currently, the only formal communication channel between the two nations is a ceasefire monitoring mechanism facilitated by the United States, France, and the United Nations. This body convenes regularly in southern Lebanon, but crucially, Lebanese and Israeli representatives do not engage in direct dialogue.

Hezbollah was the only armed group to refuse to disamarm after Lebanon's civil war, arguing that it mcust remain ready to defence the country from Israel.

Hezbollah stands apart in Lebanon’s political landscape, uniquely refusing to disarm following the brutal 1975-1990 civil war. Initially, their justification centered on liberating Israeli-occupied territories, but has since evolved to encompass the broader defense of Lebanon itself.

In a direct appeal to the Lebanese people and their leadership, Hezbollah condemned any negotiations with Israel as detrimental to national interests. The group, backed by Iran, reaffirmed its “legitimate right” to defend against what it perceives as ongoing Israeli aggression and imposed war.

Despite this firm stance, Hezbollah maintains its commitment to the ceasefire agreement reached last year, a fragile truce that followed months of intense hostilities. However, Israel has issued warnings of escalating operations in Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of actively attempting to rearm.

Recent statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echo these concerns, alleging a deliberate effort by Hezbollah to rebuild its military capabilities following significant losses in the previous conflict. The situation is further complicated by US envoy Tom Barrack’s suggestion that dialogue with Israel could be a key to de-escalation.

The Lebanese government is now grappling with the contentious issue of disarming Hezbollah, a directive that has sparked fierce opposition from the group and its allies. President Joseph Aoun has faced criticism from Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz, who accused him of deliberately delaying implementation.

Israel insists on full implementation of the ceasefire terms, demanding Hezbollah’s removal from southern Lebanon and a complete disarmament. They have signaled a willingness to intensify military action if these demands are not met, citing the need to protect Israeli citizens.

The previous conflict saw devastating losses for Hezbollah, including the death of its longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and numerous other senior commanders. The ceasefire agreement stipulated that the Lebanese army would oversee Hezbollah’s disarmament in the south by the end of the year, with a broader disarmament plan to follow.

Hezbollah has denounced the government’s disarmament plan as “hasty” and opportunistic, claiming Israel is exploiting the situation to its advantage. This escalating rhetoric and the continued military posturing threaten to unravel the fragile peace and plunge the region into renewed conflict.

Israel has increased its strikes within Lebanon, routinely justifying them as targeting Hezbollah positions. These actions have drawn criticism from President Aoun, who expressed openness to negotiation only to see increased Israeli aggression.
