A chilling silence descended on the courtroom Thursday as Febrio De-Zoysa, the perpetrator of a horrific mass stabbing in Barrhaven, admitted to his crimes. He pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and one count of attempted murder – a confession that brought a wave of grief and quiet devastation to those present.
The brutal attack, which unfolded within the walls of a seemingly ordinary rented townhouse on Berrigan Drive, claimed the lives of six innocent people, including four young children. De-Zoysa had been living with the family, a quiet presence in their basement, benefiting from their generosity as an international student.
The victims were a family ripped apart: Darshani Dilanthika Ekanayake, a 35-year-old mother and wife; her children, Inuka (7), Ashwini (4), Ranaya (3), and the youngest, Kelly, just two months old. Also tragically lost was Gamini Amarakoon, a 40-year-old family friend.
Only one person survived the unimaginable violence – Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, Darshani’s husband, who suffered serious injuries. He sat in the front row of the courtroom, a visible embodiment of unbearable loss, surrounded by members of the deeply affected Sri Lankan community.
Throughout the proceedings, De-Zoysa remained largely unresponsive, his gaze fixed and vacant as the Crown lawyer detailed the horrific events. The weight of the statement of facts hung heavy in the air, each word a fresh wound for those mourning the lost.
Silent tears flowed freely among those gathered, particularly as De-Zoysa formally entered his guilty plea and the Crown presented its case. The courtroom became a space filled with unspoken sorrow, a testament to the profound impact of this senseless tragedy.
