He successfully defended his seat in 2020, narrowly overcoming a challenge from New Jersey Senate Republican leader Thomas Kean Jr. However, a 2022 rematch proved unsuccessful, with Kean ultimately securing the win by a slim margin. This past defeat fuels his current ambition.
Malinowski now enters a growing field of Democratic contenders eager to succeed Sherrill in the 11th District. The district itself has a history of shifting political allegiances, having been flipped from red to blue by Sherrill’s initial victory in 2018.
Sherrill solidified her hold on the district with comfortable re-election wins in both 2020 and 2022, demonstrating a strong connection with voters. She has indicated a commitment to a smooth transition, coordinating with House leadership to ensure minimal disruption for the people of New Jersey during the special election process.
