A father’s grief was compounded by a shocking violation this past Sunday. He visited Resurrection Cemetery in Ancaster, seeking solace at his infant daughter’s resting place, only to discover her urn – containing her precious ashes – had been stolen.
The discovery within the mausoleum left him devastated, confronting an unimaginable loss all over again. Authorities quickly launched an investigation, turning to the cemetery’s CCTV footage for answers.
The footage revealed a suspect known to police, someone with a disturbing history of similar thefts from cemeteries. This individual was swiftly tracked to Niagara Falls and apprehended without incident on Monday.
Alongside the stolen urn, investigators recovered several other items believed to have been taken from disturbed gravesites, suggesting a pattern of callous disregard for the sanctity of remembrance. The recovered urn was returned to the grieving father.
Kevin Wintonyk, currently with no fixed address, now faces a series of charges including indignity to human remains, break and enter, and multiple counts related to the possession of stolen property and probation violations.
In a separate incident, police in Vaughan are urgently seeking information regarding a sexual assault of a minor. The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon as the victim walked near a school on New Westminster Dr. and Steeles Ave.
An unknown male allegedly approached the child and committed a sexual assault before fleeing the scene. School staff were immediately notified and confronted the suspect, but he managed to escape.
The suspect is described as a white male, between 18 and 22 years old, approximately six feet tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a navy hoodie, black jacket and pants, bright orange shoes, and glasses.
Toronto Police are also investigating a disturbing assault at the Bloor-Yonge TTC station. An 18-year-old woman allegedly targeted a stranger on a subway car, unleashing a torrent of homophobic slurs and spraying a noxious substance.
The victim sustained minor injuries in the attack, which is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence. The accused, Valentina Ponte Diaz, was also recently reported missing before her arrest.
Diaz faces charges of assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, and administering a noxious substance with intent. Investigators are appealing to the public for any information related to this hateful act.
Anyone with information regarding any of these incidents is urged to contact the relevant police authorities. These cases underscore a troubling wave of violations, impacting vulnerable individuals and shattering the peace of communities.
