After a six-year silence, the iconic Filipino pop-rock band IV of Spades has returned, unleashing their sophomore album, Andalucia, upon the world. The release marks not just a comeback, but a powerful resurgence for a band that helped define modern OPM.
Before the album’s arrival, the band gathered to share the story of their reunion, a journey rooted in rediscovering the bonds that initially forged their musical path. Andalucia, they explained, embodies the essence of friendship, artistic growth, and a renewed sense of unity.
For Zild Benitez, Blaster Silonga, Badjao de Castro, and Unique Salonga, rebuilding their connection was paramount. They prioritized their relationship above all else, understanding that a strong foundation was essential for creating authentic music.
“We’re just happy and very relaxed,” confessed lead guitarist and vocalist Blaster Silonga, describing their current dynamic. “It’s like we’re just working on a school project.” The band had gradually reconnected since 2022, a slow and deliberate process that ultimately healed old wounds and reignited their creative spark.
Unique Salonga, who initially pursued a solo career in 2018, admitted the road back to friendship wasn't immediate. “I really did miss being with the three of them,” he revealed, a testament to the enduring power of their shared history.
Andalucia, co-produced by Brian Lotho and Emil Dela Rosa, boasts twelve tracks that explore a diverse range of genres and emotions, all while retaining IV of Spades’ signature introspective songwriting style.
The album’s title itself emerged from a serendipitous moment. Zild Benitez recalled, “We laughed at it at first, but after a few seconds, ‘that kinda sounds good!’” – a nod to the apartment building where they often gathered, unknowingly laying the groundwork for their musical rebirth.
The sound of Andalucia represents a deliberate shift from their previous album, ClapClapClap! “During that time, we felt like doing funk and disco,” explained Zild Benitez. “Now, we want a homey sound because we just recorded it at home.”
The band embraces a philosophy of artistic freedom, prioritizing their own creative vision. “You can’t please everyone,” Zild Benitez stated confidently, “But I can please myself and my friends!”
The album opens with “Tara,” a favorite of drummer Badjao de Castro for its acoustic rock feel that evokes the warmth of a sunset. “Monster,” a vibrant and gritty rock anthem, follows, injecting a surge of energy with its retro influences.
Listeners will also find “Konsensya,” a compelling blend of 1990s alternative, indie, and Britpop sounds, and the poignant closing track, “Suliranin,” an escapist anthem that encourages listeners to shed their worries and find solace in the music.
The release of Andalucia is accompanied by a series of sold-out concerts at the Mall of Asia Arena, a testament to the band’s enduring popularity and the anticipation surrounding their return. The overwhelming demand led to the addition of a second performance, promising an unforgettable experience for fans.
