Former President Trump publicly lauded Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, asserting European leaders should show him “very strong” respect. The comments came during a White House visit, framing Orban as uniquely prescient regarding the challenges of immigration.
Trump painted a stark picture of Europe grappling with uncontrolled migration, claiming it has led to rising crime rates and a fundamental shift in the continent’s character. He directly contrasted this with Hungary, highlighting its comparatively low crime statistics as a direct result of its strict immigration policies.
The former President warned European leaders they risked losing their continent if they didn’t alter course, describing the current situation as “a very dangerous thing.” His words echoed a long-held stance on border security and national sovereignty.
Orban, in turn, detailed Hungary’s approach to immigration: a system of strict control and pre-approval. He explained that no one enters Hungary without explicit permission from authorities, a policy he described as “simple, while working.”
This uncompromising stance, however, has come at a significant cost. Orban revealed Hungary is currently facing daily financial penalties from the European Union – a staggering €1 million per day – for refusing to allow unchecked migration into the country and the wider EU.
The EU’s actions stem from a June 2024 ruling by the bloc’s top court, which imposed a $223 million fine on Hungary for denying migrants the right to seek asylum. Further daily penalties were levied for continued non-compliance with the court’s directives.
Orban characterized the situation as an “absurd world,” suggesting Hungary is being punished for upholding its national borders and enforcing its immigration laws. The conflict underscores a deep ideological divide within Europe regarding migration policy.
