Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized Hong Kong’s potential as a place where Filipino domestic workers can hone their skills through specialized training. He highlighted the Philippines’ global reputation for compassionate care, a quality consistently demonstrated by its workforce abroad.
Recent discussions between Philippine and Hong Kong officials, including Secretary Cacdac and Hong Kong Labor Secretary Chris Sun, centered on bolstering the protection and overall wellbeing of Filipino domestic helpers. Both sides committed to ongoing communication and collaboration to provide the highest level of support.
Currently, over 200,000 Filipinos are employed as domestic helpers in Hong Kong, representing a significant 10% of the city’s total workforce. This substantial presence underscores the importance of a strong, cooperative relationship between the two regions.
The Philippine government has also expressed gratitude for a recent wage increase for foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong. The minimum allowable wage has been adjusted upwards by 2.2%, rising from HK$4,990 to HK$5,100, providing a tangible benefit to these essential workers.
