UWAN UNLEASHED: Millions Devastated, Lives Lost!

UWAN UNLEASHED: Millions Devastated, Lives Lost!

Super Typhoon Fung-Wong, known locally as Uwan, unleashed a devastating fury across the nation over the weekend, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.

The storm’s relentless winds and torrential rains claimed at least two lives – one in Catanduanes, a victim of drowning, and another in Samar, crushed when a structure collapsed. Authorities are working to confirm if these deaths were directly caused by the typhoon’s immense power.

Nearly 1.2 million people were impacted, their lives upended by the storm’s brutal force. Reports indicate injuries in Catanduanes and Iloilo, adding to the growing toll of suffering.

The hardest-hit regions – III, V, VI, VIII, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and CARAGA – are grappling with widespread devastation. Families have been displaced, homes destroyed, and communities left reeling.

Zara Nie, a 34-year-old resident of Catanduanes, witnessed the storm’s terrifying power firsthand. A video captured by her brother showed floodwaters surging to rooftop level in their district, a scene of unprecedented devastation.

“The water rose so quickly,” Nie recounted, describing how a nearby river overflowed, engulfing their neighborhood. “It’s the first time we’ve ever seen a flood this severe.”

Even a dike, constructed to protect the area, proved powerless against the sheer volume of rainfall. The storm’s intensity overwhelmed defenses, leaving residents vulnerable and exposed.

While the floodwaters have begun to recede, the need for assistance remains critical. Residents are urgently requesting food, especially for children, and supplies to rebuild their shattered homes.

In Catanduanes alone, over 127,000 individuals were affected, with nearly 23,000 seeking refuge in evacuation centers. Dozens of areas remain flooded, a stark reminder of the storm’s lingering impact.

As some evacuees cautiously return home, aid organizations are bracing for potential surges in demand as water levels remain unpredictable in Cagayan, Isabela, and surrounding areas.

The Philippine Red Cross is preparing to provide essential support – hot meals, clean water, sleeping materials, and hygiene kits – to those in need for the coming days. They are also proactively distributing doxycycline to prevent the spread of leptospirosis, a dangerous disease often contracted during floods.

The focus now is on providing immediate relief and supporting the long road to recovery for communities shattered by Super Typhoon Fung-Wong’s devastating impact.
