A new voice now answers the non-emergency line for the Halton Regional Police Service – and it’s not human. After months of meticulous development, the force has launched SARA, a sophisticated artificial intelligence designed to streamline call processing and free up vital resources.
The shift represents a significant leap forward in how police respond to routine inquiries. SARA, which stands for Smart Answering Routing Assistant, is available 24/7, ready to handle a substantial portion of the 160,000 non-emergency calls received each year.
Deputy Chief Jeff Hill emphasized the rigorous testing SARA underwent. The Communications Bureau and Information Technology Unit dedicated months to training and refining the AI, subjecting it to countless scenarios to ensure accuracy and appropriate response.
When someone calls the non-emergency line, they’ll be greeted by SARA’s automated voice. The system will then ask a series of concise questions, carefully designed to assess the nature of the call and determine the best course of action.
SARA isn’t intended to replace human interaction entirely. The AI is programmed to immediately transfer calls to a live communicator in several critical situations – if an emergency is detected, if the system struggles to understand the caller, or if translation services are needed.
Every interaction with SARA is recorded and transcribed in real time, providing a detailed audit trail and allowing for continuous improvement of the system’s performance. This ensures accountability and helps refine SARA’s ability to accurately assess and route calls.
The implementation of SARA allows human communicators to focus on genuine emergencies, ultimately enhancing public safety and ensuring a more efficient response to critical situations. It’s a strategic move designed to optimize resources and deliver better service.
