The age-old seaside battle between humans and gulls has a new tactic, and it’s surprisingly simple. For years, vacationers have surrendered snacks to brazen gulls, accepting pilfered chips and ice cream as an unfortunate part of the beach experience. But a recent study suggests a direct, vocal response might be the key to reclaiming those treats.
Researchers at the University of Exeter delved into the minds of these feathered bandits, conducting a fascinating experiment across the Cornish coastline. They presented gulls with the ultimate temptation – a portion of fish and chips – and then unleashed a carefully curated soundscape to observe their reactions.
The soundscape included a crucial element: a human voice. One recording featured a firm, assertive shout – “No, stay away, that’s my food, that’s my pasty!” – while another delivered the same message in a calm, measured tone. A robin’s cheerful song served as a control, offering a natural sound for comparison.
The results were striking. Gulls were three times more likely to take flight when confronted with the shouting voice compared to the calm speech. The robin’s song proved the least effective deterrent, barely registering as a threat to the determined birds.
Out of twenty-one gulls subjected to the shouting, a significant ten immediately flew away, while three opted for a strategic retreat on foot. Only eight stubbornly remained, undeterred by the vocal outburst. This contrasted sharply with the calmer approach.
When presented with the speaking voice, only three gulls took to the air, while ten chose to walk away and seven defiantly held their ground. The birdsong elicited the weakest response, with just three flying off, three walking away, and a majority of fourteen staying put.
“Gulls were more likely to fly away at the shouting and more likely to walk away at the speaking,” explained Neeltje Boogert, a researcher at the university’s Centre for Ecology and Conservation. The study reveals a nuanced understanding of gull behavior.
The takeaway is clear: if a gull attempts a food heist, a firm shout is your best bet to send it soaring. While a calm talking-to might halt its advance, a decisive yell is far more effective at securing a swift and complete retreat.
