The remnants of Tropical Storm Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, are tracking towards Taiwan, steadily losing strength as it encounters challenging atmospheric conditions and land.
The storm, currently packing sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 90 kph, was last positioned 210 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes. Forecasters predict further weakening as Uwan makes landfall.
This system carries a somber history, having already claimed 27 lives and injured 36 individuals as of November 12th, according to reports from the Office of Civil Defense.
Despite the weakening trend, a Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect for Batanes, indicating the potential for minimal to minor wind impacts across the region. Residents are advised to remain vigilant.
The approaching landmass of Taiwan is expected to disrupt the storm’s circulation, accelerating its dissipation and lessening its overall threat. The focus now shifts to monitoring its final stages and assessing the full extent of the damage already inflicted.
