A renewed threat descended upon the northern Philippines Wednesday afternoon as Tropical Storm Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, re-entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility. The storm’s return immediately triggered warnings and preparations for potentially disruptive weather conditions across the region.
Currently carrying sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 90 kph, Uwan was positioned 210 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes. This proximity prompted authorities to raise Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over the Batanes Islands, signaling the onset of strong winds.
The storm’s trajectory suggests a close encounter with southern Taiwan, where landfall is anticipated later this evening. Uwan is currently drifting east-northeastward at a relatively slow pace of 10 kilometers per hour, allowing time for residents to brace for impact.
Residents of Batanes should prepare for sustained strong winds over the next 36 hours. While the current forecast indicates minimal to minor threats to life and property, vigilance remains crucial during this period.
Beyond the wind threat, a Gale Warning has been issued for the seaboard of extreme northern Luzon. Mariners are strongly advised to remain ashore, as the seas are expected to become dangerously rough, posing a significant risk to small vessels.
