The spirit of the holidays arrives early this year with a captivating new production ofA Christmas Carol the Musical, set to grace the stage this November. This isn’t just a retelling of a beloved story; it’s an immersive experience promising to transport audiences to the heart of Victorian London.
The musical faithfully adapts Charles Dickens’ timeless novella, following the chilling transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge. Witness his journey as he’s confronted by spectral visitors – ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come – each forcing him to confront the choices that have defined his bitter existence.
This particular adaptation, first unveiled in 1994, boasts a stunning score by Alan Menken, the lyrical artistry of Lynn Ahrens, and a compelling book by Mike Ockrent and Ahrens. It’s a combination that has resonated with audiences for decades, and promises a truly magical theatrical experience.
Arnel Carrion steps into the formidable role of Scrooge, a character he approaches with profound respect. He acknowledges the legacy of previous performers, particularly the late Miguel Faustmann, and embraces the weight of portraying such an iconic figure.
For Carrion, this role represents a poignant “full-circle” moment. Having previously graced the stage as Bob Cratchit and Fred, Scrooge’s nephew, he now embodies the miser’s complex emotional arc – a journey from hardened cynicism to heartfelt redemption.
The production features a vibrant ensemble of over 30 actors, bringing Dickens’ world to life with energy and passion. Young talents Enzo Dognidon and Jethro Ting share the touching role of Tiny Tim, embodying the story’s enduring message of hope.
Adding to the spectacle are seasoned performers Franco Laurel as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Lorenz Martinez as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Carmelle Ros as the haunting Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Boo Gabunada chills as Jacob Marley, Scrooge’s former partner.
The artistic vision extends beyond the performers, with a dedicated team led by director Robbie Guevara. He’s joined by assistant director Raul Montesa, musical director Daniel Bartolome, scenographer Mio Infante, and choreographer PJ Rebullida, all working to create a truly unforgettable production.
This staging at the Proscenium Theater in Rockwell has been a long-held dream for 9 Works Theatrical. The venue itself feels destined to host this particular musical, considered by many to be the quintessential Christmas theatrical experience.
Director Guevara and his team are aiming for a uniquely “dreamy” quality in this production. The intention is to immerse the audience in Scrooge’s internal world, blurring the lines between reality and the spectral realms he encounters.
Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m., running from November 29th to December 21st. Prepare to be swept away by a timeless tale of transformation and the enduring power of the Christmas spirit.
