Hyman recounted a recent attack in a women’s locker room at Gold’s Gym, allegedly perpetrated by an individual identifying as a transgender woman with a history of domestic violence. The experience, she explained, left her deeply shaken and ignited a profound concern for the safety of other women.
“I’m deeply concerned about women’s safety in female-only spaces,” Hyman stated, directly addressing the senator. She pressed Wiener on what message he would offer to women seeking guarantees of protection from individuals legally permitted to identify as women in spaces designated for females.

“I’m a lesbian Black woman, I’m not transphobic, I’m not homophobic… but I do see a lot of these bills you’ve passed that are dangerous for women and young children,” she explained, her voice resonating with conviction.
Hyman’s core argument centered on a fundamental distinction: “Women and trans women are different things.” This statement drew immediate objections from some in the audience, who passionately countered with the refrain, “Trans women are women.”
