Palawan, a paradise known for its pristine beaches and vibrant ecosystems, faces a growing energy challenge. A proposed expansion of an existing power plant could dramatically alter the island’s energy landscape, aiming to bolster a system increasingly strained by rising demand.
DMCI Power Corp. is seeking approval for a P3-billion project to add 15 megawatts of power generation to its existing facility in Narra, Palawan. This expansion would bring the plant’s total capacity to 30 megawatts, a significant increase for an area reliant on off-grid power solutions.
The need for this expansion stems from a surge in electricity demand across Palawan. The Palawan Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Paleco) has reported that current power sources are struggling to keep pace, leaving the island vulnerable to disruptive brownouts.
These brownouts are particularly acute during routine maintenance shutdowns of independent power producers (IPPs). Without a sufficient power reserve, even scheduled outages can plunge communities into darkness, impacting daily life and economic activity.
Currently, the existing 15-megawatt facility operates at its maximum capacity, but its ability to provide a consistent power supply is limited. DMCI Power warns that without the expansion, Palawan risks facing increasingly frequent and prolonged power interruptions as demand continues to climb.
The proposed project, encompassing a 227,863 square meter area, is directly tied to DMCI Power’s contractual obligations with Paleco. It represents a critical step in ensuring a stable and reliable power supply for the island’s residents and businesses.
DMCI Power specializes in bringing energy to remote and off-grid locations, currently operating plants on islands like Masbate and Oriental Mindoro. This expertise positions them as a key player in addressing Palawan’s unique energy needs.
The company, a subsidiary of the diversified DMCI Holdings, Inc., has not yet announced a timeline for the commercial operation of the expanded facility. However, the urgency of the situation suggests a swift progression through the approval process is anticipated.
