EURO 2028 SHOCKER: Premier League Giants LOCKED OUT!

EURO 2028 SHOCKER: Premier League Giants LOCKED OUT!

The roar of the crowd will echo across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland as Euro 2028 prepares to ignite the continent. Wembley Stadium, steeped in footballing history, has been confirmed as the iconic venue for the tournament’s climactic final – a stage previously graced by Euro 96 and Euro 2020 showpieces.

But the selection of host cities wasn’t without its complexities. Manchester United’s Old Trafford, a legendary ground, found itself excluded due to uncertainty surrounding the club’s ambitious plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium. The timing of a potential redevelopment, or complete rebuild, simply couldn’t be guaranteed by the deadline for stadium confirmations.

Anfield, Liverpool’s beloved home, also fell short. Despite its fervent atmosphere, the pitch dimensions – measuring 101 metres instead of the required 105 – rendered it ineligible, not just for Euro 2028, but also for Champions League and Europa League finals.

Italy v England - UEFA Euro 2020: Final

London will be a focal point, with Wembley sharing hosting duties with the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, however, will experience a quieter summer. The Gunners are contemplating a significant redevelopment to expand capacity beyond 70,000, and foregoing hosting duties in 2028 provides crucial flexibility for such a project.

Manchester’s Etihad Stadium, currently undergoing expansion to exceed 60,000 seats, will host five matches, including England’s tournament opener should the Three Lions qualify. The brand new Everton Stadium, with a capacity of 52,769, will also feature prominently, hosting five games including a Round of 16 clash.

Further north, St James’ Park in Newcastle, a venue steeped in Euro 96 memories, is set to welcome fans once more. Should England top their group, a Round of 16 encounter could unfold on Tyneside. Villa Park in Birmingham, a historic ground that hosted matches during the 1966 World Cup, will also play a role, hosting four fixtures.

Manchester United v Sunderland - Premier League

Wales and Scotland will experience the tournament’s energy firsthand. Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, boasting a capacity of 74,500, will host the opening game on June 9th, offering Wales a powerful incentive to qualify. Hampden Park in Glasgow, a familiar venue from Euro 2020, will again be a vibrant hub, potentially hosting all three of Scotland’s group games if they secure qualification.

Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, which was originally slated to host matches in the postponed Euro 2020, has been reinstated as a host city, set to stage seven games. The tournament promises a thrilling spectacle, weaving together the passion of fans and the drama of international football across a diverse range of iconic stadiums.

The group stage kicks off on June 9th in Cardiff, with a clash between teams from Group A. A packed schedule will then unfold across all ten venues, culminating in the highly anticipated final at Wembley on July 9th – a date circled on the calendars of football enthusiasts across Europe.

Peterborough United v Wycombe Wanderers - Bristol Street Motors Trophy Final

The Round of 16 will see matches played in Cardiff, Liverpool, Newcastle, London, Manchester, and Birmingham, setting the stage for the quarter-finals. Wembley and Dublin will host quarter-final clashes, while Glasgow and Cardiff will also feature. The semi-finals, and ultimately the final, will be decided under the iconic arch of Wembley Stadium.
