Imagine a world where snagging a deal online takes just one tap. Google is quietly rolling out a new feature that brings that vision closer to reality, using artificial intelligence to handle the entire checkout process for you.
This isn’t about AI randomly deciding what you need. It builds upon Google’s existing price-tracking tool. When an item you’ve been watching hits your desired price, you might see a “Buy for me” button appear, offering to complete the purchase on your behalf.
Before anything happens, Google’s AI will ask for your explicit permission. It will then confirm your shipping and payment details – pulling from your Google Pay information or requesting it directly – ensuring you’re fully in control.
The price you see isn’t determined by AI guesswork, but by Google’s Shopping Graph, a direct feed from the retailer. This aims to provide accurate pricing, though relying solely on the notification means bypassing the opportunity for independent price comparisons.
Think of it as handing a trusted assistant a link and saying, “Go ahead, fill out this form for me.” The AI navigates the checkout process, potentially saving you valuable time and effort. However, every website’s checkout is unique, so the initial rollout is limited.
For now, this “agentic checkout” is available with Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and select Shopify merchants. Google promises to expand this list rapidly, but the initial selection is understandably cautious, prioritizing accuracy and minimizing errors.
While convenient, this feature could subtly encourage impulse buys. That tempting button might lead to purchases you hadn’t fully considered, so a moment of pause before tapping could be wise.
To try it yourself, start by tracking a product’s price within Google Shopping. Search for the item you want, find the tracking option on the product card, and set your desired price. If the listing is from a participating retailer, the “Buy for me” button will appear when the price drops.
Once you tap the button, review your details and confirm with “Buy for me with GPay.” A progress bar will keep you informed, and you’ll receive a confirmation email and a unique reference ID for support if needed.
Currently, the AI has limitations. It doesn’t yet factor in loyalty programs or store-specific accounts, meaning you’ll still need to handle those purchases manually if earning rewards is a priority.
For now, agentic checkout is a promising glimpse into the future of online shopping, but it’s not a complete replacement for the human touch. It’s a tool to streamline purchases, but mindful shopping habits remain essential.
The potential benefit for retailers is significant. Simplifying the path to purchase from a price drop notification could dramatically increase conversion rates and encourage more spontaneous buying decisions.
