A Texas congressman, married with six children, has publicly addressed swirling rumors connecting him to a staffer who tragically died in September. Representative Tony Gonzales has faced intense speculation regarding his relationship with Regina Santos-Aviles, a senior aide who reportedly took her own life.
Santos-Aviles, 35, and a mother herself, was frequently seen alongside Gonzales at public events. These included high-profile appearances, such as a tour of the Mexico border with Elon Musk in Eagle Pass, raising questions about the nature of their professional relationship.
Speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival, Gonzales vehemently denied any romantic involvement with Santos-Aviles, dismissing the reports as “completely untruthful” and expressing distrust of the sources spreading the claims.
He also stated he had not been contacted about the circumstances surrounding her death and claimed to have initiated no inquiries himself. Gonzales emphasized the family’s need for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
Santos-Aviles was found ablaze in her Uvalde home in September, discovered by her mother. Surveillance footage revealed she was alone in her backyard when the incident occurred.
First responders arrived to find her still alive, but she succumbed to her injuries the following morning. Authorities determined she had doused herself in gasoline before igniting her body.
While the death has been classified as a suicide, a final report and autopsy from the Bexar County medical examiner’s office are still pending. The delay has fueled further scrutiny and speculation.
Concerns have been raised regarding the handling of evidence in the case, with reports suggesting local police are hindering the release of crucial information, including the 911 call, surveillance footage, and official police records.
Gonzales has previously drawn criticism from within his own party for his positions on issues like gun control and immigration, often perceived as leaning left. He has also made disparaging remarks about prominent Trump supporters.
Last year, during a CNN appearance, Gonzales labeled key figures within the Trump movement as “real scumbags” and controversially compared them to the Ku Klux Klan over their stance on funding for Ukraine, further solidifying his position as a divisive figure within the GOP.
