Toronto police have faced criticism after a video resurfaced that shows officers confronting a transphobic encounter near a pride-themed police vehicle.
The clip, released by the department in June, features Sergeant Rob Chevalier, a liaison officer for the LGBTQ community, and an individual identified as “Nevada.” The footage captures a brief exchange when a driver questioned the officers’ identities as they returned a trans woman to her home.
During the interaction, the driver asked whether the officers were “cops or just identify as cops.” Chevalier replied, “What does it look like I am?” The driver responded with a dismissive remark that sparked the department’s decision to share the exchange publicly as part of an effort to counter transphobia.
Chevalier highlighted a 140% rise in hate crimes against LGBTQ individuals and criticized the driver’s “violent rhetoric.”
The police department maintains a dedicated liaison role to support LGBTQ officers and community members, offering training and outreach on related issues.
Comments from outside the department have criticized the incident as “ridiculous,” reflecting broader tensions surrounding trans rights and law enforcement representation.
