A suspect in the attack on the office of U.S. Attorney Alina Habba is now in custody, authorities announced Saturday. The arrest culminates a swift investigation launched after the incident earlier this week, bringing a measure of relief to those concerned for Habba’s safety and the security of federal officials.
The FBI identified the suspect as Keith Michael Lisa, 51, and issued a federal warrant for his arrest on Thursday. He is accused of entering the Peter W. Rodino Federal Building in Newark, New Jersey, on November 12th, initially armed with a baseball bat.
Denied entry, Lisa allegedly discarded the bat before re-entering the building and proceeding directly to Habba’s office. Once inside, he reportedly damaged government property, escalating the situation into a serious breach of security.
The incident prompted a strong response from Attorney General Pam Bondi, who declared that no threats or acts of intimidation against U.S. Attorneys would be tolerated. Bondi emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting a disturbing trend of attacks against law enforcement officials across the nation.
Habba herself responded with defiance, stating she would not be intimidated by “radical lunatics” for simply performing her duties. This resolute stance underscores her commitment to upholding the law despite facing direct threats.
Authorities described Lisa as approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing between 200 and 230 pounds, warning that he should be considered dangerous. Investigators traced his connections to both New York City and Mahwah, New Jersey, aiding in the search.
As Acting U.S. Attorney and Special Attorney to the Attorney General, Habba holds a significant position within the Justice Department. She oversees all federal criminal prosecutions and civil matters in New Jersey, managing a substantial team of prosecutors and support staff across multiple offices.
The swift apprehension of Lisa sends a clear message: attacks on federal officials and the destruction of government property will be met with a forceful and decisive response. The focus now shifts to prosecution and ensuring justice is served.
