TEACHERS SILENCED NO MORE: $650K Victory Against Trans Lesson Mandates!

TEACHERS SILENCED NO MORE: $650K Victory Against Trans Lesson Mandates!

A school district in Oregon will pay $650,000 to settle with two educators who lost their jobs after voicing concerns about a new gender identity policy. Katie Medart and Rachel Sager found themselves at the center of a First Amendment battle, punished for daring to question the direction of their district.

The dispute arose from a policy promoting approaches to gender identity that included medical interventions for children, a practice that sparked deep concern among the educators. Medart and Sager believed the policy disregarded parental rights and potentially harmed students.

Driven by their convictions, they formed “I Resolve,” a grassroots effort to advocate for alternative approaches. They sought a path that would allow teachers to continue their work without compromising their beliefs, and ensure parents were informed about sensitive discussions happening in the classroom.

Their efforts included posting a video outlining their concerns and proposed solutions on their own platform. This act of speaking out quickly led to suspension, and ultimately, termination from Grants Pass School District 7.

Legal representation from the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Pacific Justice Institute argued that the district violated the teachers’ fundamental rights. They asserted that educators do not forfeit their First Amendment protections simply by entering school grounds.

The legal teams emphasized that public schools are prohibited from retaliating against speech, even when they strongly disagree with the message. This principle, they argued, is crucial for protecting the freedoms of teachers, parents, and students alike.

Both Sager, a former assistant principal, and Medart, a science teacher at North Middle School, had dedicated years to education within the Grants Pass district. Their dismissal threatened not only their livelihoods but also their reputations.

The settlement includes a significant financial award to cover damages and legal fees. More importantly, the district will issue a public statement acknowledging the wrongful termination and commit to revising its policies to align with First Amendment principles.

The district also agreed to provide positive letters of recommendation for both educators, helping them rebuild their careers. This outcome was reached after a favorable ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which overturned a previous decision in favor of the school and paved the way for a trial the district ultimately avoided.

This case serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting free speech, even – and especially – when it challenges prevailing ideologies. It underscores the right of educators to voice concerns about policies that impact students and families without fear of reprisal.
