The race is on for AirAsia Philippines to reach a significant milestone: carrying seven million passengers before the year concludes. Despite recent disruptions, the airline remains fiercely determined to achieve this ambitious goal, navigating challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns.
President and General Manager Suresh Bangah acknowledged the setbacks caused by typhoons and unavoidable natural events, factors entirely outside the airline’s influence. However, he emphasized an unwavering commitment to maximize opportunities during the approaching peak travel season, striving to recover lost ground and fulfill the seven-million passenger target by December’s end.
Earlier in the year, a surge in advance bookings – reaching 3.5 million – signaled strong consumer confidence and anticipated travel demand. Historically, the latter half of the year and major holidays consistently drive booking increases, fueling optimism for a strong finish.
From January through June, AirAsia Philippines successfully transported over three million passengers, establishing a solid foundation for continued growth. While current figures remain undisclosed, the airline is focused on capitalizing on upcoming travel opportunities.
A strategic expansion of its Cebu hub marked a pivotal moment for the airline on Saturday. Two new international routes – connecting Cebu to Kuala Lumpur and Macau – and three domestic routes, linking Cebu to Iloilo, Caticlan, and Davao, were launched, significantly broadening its network.
The inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur to Cebu was met with a spectacular welcome: a traditional water cannon salute, symbolizing a momentous occasion for the airline and the region. This expansion underscores AirAsia’s commitment to serving a wider range of destinations and passengers.
Regarding operational capacity, the airline currently maintains a fleet of 16 aircraft in Manila and two in Cebu. Officials confirmed this is currently sufficient to handle the anticipated surge in demand during the crucial December travel period.
Looking ahead, AirAsia Philippines has outlined a phased plan to bolster its fleet, aiming to add two aircraft annually, beginning in 2026. This expansion strategy is designed to accommodate growing passenger numbers and enhance overall capacity, though the pace could accelerate based on market conditions.
The airline remains flexible, prepared to adjust its fleet expansion plans upwards if demand continues to exceed expectations, demonstrating a proactive approach to meeting the evolving needs of travelers.
