A vital railway line connecting Warsaw to southeastern Poland has been crippled by a powerful explosion, an act the prime minister has unequivocally labeled as sabotage. The incident, discovered Sunday morning, has sent shockwaves through the nation and raised serious concerns about security.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk, after personally inspecting the damage near the village of Mika, confirmed the worst fears: a deliberate attack had destroyed a section of the track. This particular line isn’t just a transportation route; it’s a critical artery for delivering essential aid to Ukraine.
The initial report came from a train driver who noticed irregularities around 7:40 a.m. Sunday. A subsequent inspection revealed the extent of the damage – a section of track completely obliterated by an explosion. The timing of the blast remains unclear, potentially occurring late Saturday or early Sunday.
Remarkably, despite the severity of the incident, no one was injured. A train carrying two passengers and several staff members was in the vicinity when the damage was discovered, but all were unharmed. The near miss underscores the potential for a far greater tragedy.
In response to this escalating threat, the Polish army is launching a comprehensive examination of a 120-kilometer stretch of the Warsaw-Lublin-Hrubieszow line. This route serves as a crucial link, connecting the capital directly to Ukraine via both rail and road.
The sabotage wasn’t isolated. A second train experienced damage on Sunday, this time on the Świnoujście to Rzeszow route. Overhead electrical cables were deliberately compromised, forcing the train to a halt approximately 50 kilometers from Lublin.
This second incident involved 475 passengers, all of whom escaped injury. Authorities are treating both events as interconnected and are pursuing a full investigation, determined to uncover the perpetrators and their motives.
Poland has been on high alert since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Dozens of individuals have already been detained on suspicion of sabotage and espionage, highlighting the ongoing threat and the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its infrastructure and supporting its ally.
