The tranquil evening of November 13th shattered for a woman enjoying a routine jog in Plano’s Bob Woodruff Park. Without warning, a man attacked her, wielding a hammer and striking her multiple times during the peaceful exercise.
Despite the brutal assault, the woman demonstrated remarkable courage, fighting back against her attacker before he fled the scene. Emergency responders arrived quickly, transporting her to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that, thankfully, were not life-threatening.
Police swiftly launched an investigation, focusing on evidence left behind at the park. This led to the identification of 17-year-old Sergio Noe de Nova Duarte as the prime suspect, linking him to a hammer, duct tape, and other undisclosed items found near the attack site.
Duarte’s arrest revealed a troubling history. He initially entered the United States in 2016 on a tourist visa, with a deportation order issued the same year. He was allowed to remain, however, and his past quickly escalated.
In 2024 alone, Duarte faced arrests for burglary and larceny. Following these arrests, authorities released him with a notice to appear in immigration court two years later – a decision that would have devastating consequences.
Federal officials have now placed an immigration detainer on Duarte, charging him with aggravated kidnapping and causing bodily injury. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed his extensive record and the circumstances surrounding his release.
