SNOWBIRD SLAIN: Belize Arrests Killer!

SNOWBIRD SLAIN: Belize Arrests Killer!

A quiet life, abruptly shattered. Canadian snowbird Marty Ann Throne, 65, was found murdered on her own property in Belize on November 9th, a brutal end to years spent embracing a life south of the border.

Police have arrested and charged 25-year-old Gain Eldred Waigth, a local construction worker, with the stabbing murder. Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a robbery gone tragically wrong, a desperate act that extinguished a beloved life.

Thorne wasn’t simply a visitor; she was woven into the fabric of the Bullet Tree Village community, a place she’d called home for decades. She owned and operated Raw Spa Cabanas, a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and her desire to share a peaceful retreat with others.

But Belize, despite its beauty, carries a dark undercurrent. The nation consistently ranks among the most violent in the world, a reality that casts a long shadow over even the most idyllic settings.

Official warnings paint a stark picture: a high per-capita murder rate, rampant drug and human trafficking, and a prevalence of organized crime. Violent incidents, including murder, robbery, and assault, are tragically common, even targeting foreign residents.

The village of Bullet Tree, bordering Guatemala, is particularly vulnerable. Its small population – just over 2,100 – belies the dangers that lurk, especially after dark. The news of Thorne’s death sent shockwaves through the close-knit community.

“I knew Ms. Thorne. We are like family… I never believed what’s happened to her,” shared a devastated neighbour, Michael Waight, with local news. He described a horrific scene, the sight of blood a chilling confirmation of a nightmare unfolding.

This isn’t an isolated tragedy. Other Canadians have met violent ends in Belize, most notably Francesca Matus, a mother of two, and her boyfriend, Drew DeVoursney, who were murdered in 2017. Their case remains unsolved, a haunting reminder of the fragility of life and the challenges of seeking justice in this region.

Those who knew Thorne remember her warmth and kindness. “She was good people… a very friendly person, like a family,” Waight recalled, emphasizing that she appeared to have no enemies. The senselessness of the act amplifies the grief and fear within the community.

As investigators continue their work, the hope is that justice will be served for Marty Ann Throne. But the case also serves as a stark warning, a reminder of the hidden dangers that can exist even in paradise.
