LEGEND LOST: Stone Roses Bassist DEAD at 63!

LEGEND LOST: Stone Roses Bassist DEAD at 63!

The music world is reeling from the loss of Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the celebrated bassist who anchored the sounds of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. He was 63 years old.

News of his passing was confirmed by his brother, Greg, who shared a heartfelt message and a poignant photograph of Mani with his beloved wife, Imelda. The image served as a stark reminder of their enduring love, tragically cut short by Imelda’s battle with cancer in 2023.

Mani and Imelda welcomed twin sons in 2013, adding another layer of joy to a life lived fully and creatively. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed, leaving fans and colleagues in shock and mourning.

Musician Gary 'Mani' Mounfield enjoys the atmosphere ahead of the UEFA Champions League final between FC Barcelona and Manchester United FC at Wembley Stadium on May 28, 2011 in London, England.

Tributes have poured in from across the musical landscape, a testament to Mani’s profound impact. Ian Brown, frontman of The Stone Roses, simply wrote, “Rest in peace Mani X,” a sentiment echoed with raw emotion by Liam Gallagher, who declared Mani his “hero.”

Peter Hook, the iconic bassist of Joy Division and New Order, expressed his disbelief, stating that words failed him. Tim Burgess of The Charlatans shared a cherished photograph, remembering Mani’s infectious smile and unwavering positivity.

Mani’s career began with The Stone Roses, a band that defined the “Madchester” sound of the early 1990s. Their 1989 debut album, featuring anthems like “I Wanna Be Adored” and “She Bangs The Drums,” became a cultural touchstone, inspiring a generation of musicians.

Though their second album, “Second Coming,” didn’t reach the same heights, The Stone Roses left an indelible mark on music history. Internal musical differences led to the band’s dissolution in 1996, but Mani’s musical journey was far from over.

He seamlessly transitioned to Primal Scream, contributing his distinctive basslines to their influential sound for fifteen years. A reunion with his Stone Roses bandmates in 2012 offered fans a glimpse of the magic that had captivated them decades earlier.

Beyond these iconic groups, Mani also lent his talents to the rock supergroup Freebass, collaborating with fellow bass legends Peter Hook and Andy Rourke. His versatility and collaborative spirit were hallmarks of his career.

Mani was preparing for a U.K. speaking tour, scheduled to begin next September, where he planned to share intimate reflections on his extraordinary life in music. The tour, titled “The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, And Me,” promised a rare and personal insight into a true musical icon.

He was more than just a musician; he was a vibrant personality, a devoted family man, and a passionate supporter of Manchester United, who honored him as a “Manchester music icon and a passionate, lifelong Red.” His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.
