The disturbance unfolded near State and Randolph streets following a Christmas tree lighting, quickly escalating into a confrontation that gripped the city’s central business district.
Reports indicate a large group, estimated at around 300 juveniles, engaged in disruptive behavior, directly attacking police with weapons like mace and stun guns. At least one officer required hospitalization due to the injuries sustained during the riot, highlighting the dangerous conditions faced by law enforcement.
The violence extended beyond confrontations with police, as gunfire erupted amidst the chaos. Six teenagers – aged 13 to 17 – were struck by bullets, and tragically, a 14-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a local hospital.
