A royal visit to the United States is in the planning stages, timed to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary. King Charles is expected to travel across the Atlantic next year for a state visit, a significant moment in the ongoing relationship between the two countries.
The prospect of this visit arrives after a somewhat unusual exchange between the King and former President Donald Trump. Trump, during a recent state visit to the United Kingdom, playfully lamented seeing “too many beautiful things,” hinting at a potentially similar, perhaps understated, reception for the King in Washington.
Despite the historical context of celebrating independence from British rule, the Americans are anticipated to extend a full state welcome to King Charles. The visit will be a landmark occasion, acknowledging the enduring ties between the US and the UK.
Trump has suggested a less conventional tour for the King, joking about skipping the traditional landmarks in favor of a simple dinner and an early night. This playful banter follows a gesture by King Charles himself, who curated a special historical exhibit for Trump during his visit to the UK.
The question now is whether Trump will reciprocate with a curated experience for the King, perhaps drawing from the rich collections of institutions like the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The museum boasts extensive holdings related to the Revolutionary War, including perspectives from the British side.
A major exhibit, “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness,” is also set to open, commemorating the 250th anniversary and featuring iconic artifacts like the desk used by Thomas Jefferson to draft the Declaration of Independence. This could provide a compelling backdrop for the royal visit.
The King’s health will be a crucial factor in determining the feasibility of the trip, as the 77-year-old monarch is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Queen Camilla is expected to accompany him should he be well enough to travel.
Buckingham Palace has not yet released an official statement regarding the planned visit. However, King Charles has already undertaken numerous international engagements since his ascension to the throne, including state visits to France, Italy, and Kenya, as well as a recent trip to the Vatican.
Beyond the US visit, the King is also scheduled for a royal tour of Canada in 2026, further demonstrating his commitment to strengthening relationships with Commonwealth nations. These engagements underscore his active role on the world stage.
