A passenger described a harrowing mid-flight incident aboard a regional propeller plane when the pilot suddenly became unresponsive and later aggressive during a flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Halifax.
Rodney MacDonald, a traveler accompanying his wife and two sons, immediately sensed something was amiss as the De Havilland Q400 aircraft veered unexpectedly. “I could tell it wasn’t mechanical or weather related,” he said. “I thought, ‘Oh, oh.’” The flight, which was en route to family in Halifax, quickly devolved into chaos.
Midway through the journey, the pilot, identified as Craig, appeared to collapse. A flight attendant then heard a series of urgent alerts from the cockpit signaling a distress call. Responding to the emergency, a female flight attendant was seen dragging the pilot from the cockpit. “His face was green. He looked like he was dead. He wasn’t breathing,” MacDonald recounted.
As the crew struggled to subdue the pilot, who later regained consciousness and lashed out violently, passengers intervened. MacDonald joined three flight attendants in restraining the pilot, who was bound with seatbelts across his chest and arms. “He was yelling incoherently,” MacDonald said. “It was like when someone is drowning. It can be very dangerous.”
With the co-pilot assuming control, the aircraft diverted to Boston Logan International Airport for an emergency landing. “It was the longest 20 minutes of my life,” MacDonald said, describing the tense atmosphere as his sons reacted in different ways—one praying, the other engrossed in a video game.
Upon landing, emergency responders transported the pilot off the plane on a stretcher. By then, the pilot appeared to regain awareness and repeatedly apologized. Though shaken, the crew and passengers managed to stabilize the situation, ensuring the flight’s safe completion. MacDonald later boarded the same aircraft three hours later to continue his planned family trip.
“Everyone did a great job—both the staff and the passengers,” he said. The family, hoping for a smoother remainder of their vacation, now plans to travel to Rome, Italy.
