A quiet Chicago suburb is reckoning with a substantial financial fallout following a dramatic 2022 encounter with law enforcement. Oak Lawn has agreed to a settlement of $825,000 with Hadi Abuatelah, a young man who led police on a desperate flight after a routine traffic stop.
The initial stop occurred when officers detected a suspected marijuana odor emanating from Abuatelah’s vehicle. Seventeen years old at the time, Abuatelah made a split-second decision – he ran. What followed was a foot pursuit that ended with his apprehension and the discovery of a loaded firearm in his possession.
However, the arrest itself ignited a firestorm of controversy. Body camera footage revealed a brutal scene: officers repeatedly striking the restrained teen, delivering over ten blows to his head and face while he lay on the ground. The force used during the arrest left Abuatelah hospitalized for six agonizing days.
His injuries were severe, including a fractured nose, skull, and pelvis, accompanied by dangerous brain swelling. The graphic footage sparked outrage and ultimately led to the significant financial settlement, despite initial criminal charges against the officers being dropped due to insufficient evidence for prosecution.
The Village Board approved the payout, but the decision wasn’t rooted in acknowledging wrongdoing. Officials stated the settlement was driven by their insurance carrier, seeking to mitigate potential further legal costs. Oak Lawn will directly contribute $250,000, with the remainder covered by insurance funds.
The story doesn’t end with the settlement. Abuatelah, now 21, also faces serious felony charges stemming from a separate incident in December 2023. He, along with two others, is accused of violently robbing a member at a LifeTime Fitness in Orland Park.
According to prosecutors, the trio cornered a 19-year-old man in the locker room, repeatedly punching and kicking him while stealing his cell phone. Surveillance footage allegedly captured the entire assault, leading to arrest warrants for all involved.
One of Abuatelah’s alleged accomplices, Sami Hirmiz, was apprehended while attempting to evade police at a courthouse. Abuatelah was subsequently taken into custody at his residence. Another suspect, Nooh Masoud, remains at large, actively avoiding authorities.
Both Abuatelah and Hirmiz now face felony robbery charges, adding another layer of complexity to a case already marked by controversy and escalating legal battles. The events raise difficult questions about police conduct, accountability, and the consequences of choices made in moments of crisis.
