A chilling wave of violence has gripped Nigeria, targeting its Christian communities and threatening the very foundation of religious freedom. The attacks, often focused on vulnerable institutions in rural areas, reveal a deepening security crisis with devastating consequences for young people and their access to education.
Just last week, a government girls’ boarding school in Kebbi State became the scene of a terrifying ordeal. Gunmen, armed and organized, stormed the school grounds in the pre-dawn hours, unleashing a hail of gunfire. A fierce exchange with police preceded their breach of the perimeter, leading to the abduction of twenty-five female students.
The attack was brutal and direct. The school’s vice principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, was tragically murdered while bravely attempting to resist the attackers. Another staff member suffered gunshot wounds, adding to the immediate trauma of the event.
A massive search-and-rescue operation was immediately launched, involving tactical police units, soldiers, and local vigilantes. They scoured suspected escape routes and the dense surrounding forests, desperately seeking to locate the missing girls.
Relief arrived with the announcement that all the abducted schoolgirls had been safely rescued. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised the swift response of the security forces and acknowledged the incredible strength displayed by the parents and the community during this agonizing period.
President Tinubu has ordered a full security cordon around the forests in Kwara State, extending the directive to Kebbi and Niger axis. Continuous aerial surveillance will be maintained, working in concert with ground units to identify and neutralize hostile elements.
Citizens are being urged to report any suspicious activity to aid ongoing operations, emphasizing a collaborative approach to securing affected areas. The government’s response signals a determination to confront the escalating violence.
The situation, however, extends far beyond this single incident. Reports indicate a horrifying pattern of persecution. An estimated 125,009 Christians have been killed in Nigeria since 2009, a staggering figure that underscores the scale of the crisis.
The violence has intensified in recent years, with 3,100 Christians killed and 2,830 kidnapped in 2024 alone. These numbers paint a grim picture of a community under siege, facing an existential threat.
The plight of Nigerian Christians has drawn international attention. Former President Donald Trump recently described the situation as an “existential threat,” directly attributing the mass killings to radical Islamists.
Trump has called for Nigeria to be designated a “Country of Particular Concern” and has tasked members of Congress with investigating the atrocities. He emphasized the United States’ responsibility to protect Christian populations worldwide.
The escalating violence demands a comprehensive and sustained response, not only from the Nigerian government but also from the international community. The safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their faith, must be paramount.
